Inspired by the fabled Gilded Age great camps in New York’s Adirondack Mountains, architecture firm Shope Reno Wharton and designer Thom Filicia create a ravishing family retreat on the shores of Upper Saranac Lake.
The boathouse of a family’s upstate New York getaway, called Big Rock, is accented with traditional Adirondack twigwork. The compound’s buildings were designed by Shope Reno Wharton, and Thom Filicia decorated the interiors.
The living area is clad in white oak and features a fieldstone chimneypiece; the console is from Holly Hunt, and the wing chairs, upholstered in a Kravet cotton stripe and an Edelman leather, are by Dennis & Leen.
A print by Thom Filicia for Soicher Marin is mounted above the main dining area’s Barney Bellinger sideboard; the armchair at left is by George Smith.
The kitchen cabinetry, designed by Thom Filicia and Shope Reno Wharton, is painted in a Farrow & Ball white; the hood is by Wolf, the backsplash tile is by Urban Archaeology, the sink fittings are by Waterworks, and the barstools are by Marsia Holzer Studio. The wing chair, from Lillian August, and the Thom Filicia Home Collection sofa are upholstered in Perennials fabrics, and the rug is by Stark.
In the master bedroom, a twig chandelier hangs above a custom-made Murray’s Iron Works four-poster; the curtains are of a Groundworks wool, the étagères are by Mecox, and the rug is from Safavieh’s Thom Filicia Home Collection.
In the daughter’s room, a Cavern wallpaper adds a woodsy note; the vintage beds are painted in a Benjamin Moore green, the sconces are by the Urban Electric Co., and the carpet is a Matthew Williamson design for the Rug Company.
Chairs and stools from Noho Modern flank a cocktail table by Mecox on the master wing’s sleeping porch; Thom Filicia designed the slate-color throw for Eastern Accents and the carpet for Safavieh.
A terrace offers wide-open views of Upper Saranac Lake and the Adirondacks. The seating is by Summit Furniture, the petrified-wood stools are by Andrianna Shamaris, and the vintage rugs are from Sacco Carpet; the blanket is by Pendleton Woolen Mills.
